Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives (THLHLA) collects, preserves and makes publicly accessible its very rich and extensive heritage collections relating to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and its communities, residents, trades and industries, businesses, charities, places of worship and its predecessor governance bodies.
The Archives Manager is a senior post within the team, responsible for the management of the archive collections, operational management of the Reading Room service, and line management of collections and public facing staff.
Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives is a joint local studies library and archive service, and also has a small collection of paintings and museum objects. Located at 277 Bancroft Road, Mile End, E1 4DQ, we welcome several thousand people per year to undertake their own research in our Reading Room about any aspect of the borough's history, or attend a related event, exhibition or film screening.
The Archives Manager is the lead officer for collections management. Supported by the Heritage Officer (Archives) - a post which is currently jobshared by two professional archivists - and also by incoming fixed term staff, the postholder will address a substantial archives cataloguing backlog, improve collections care and lead on implementing a solution for long-term digital preservation.
Well-organised and with great communication skills, you will also oversee Reading Room operations, including (for example) organising the desk staff rota, refining enquiry response procedures and maintaining an excellent and consistent standard of customer service.
You will be keen to build on your knowledge of East End history through increased familiarity with the collections held at THLHLA in multiple formats, including books, pamphlets, photographs, and maps as well as oral history, video and digital media.
The Archives Manager will also contribute towards outreach activities, such as giving talks or developing exhibitions based on the collections. You will also deputise for the Heritage Manager when needed, and contribute to the effective management of other collections held at THLHLA such as fine art and museum objects.
A postgraduate qualification in Archives & Records Management, or equivalent experience, is required.
The regular working pattern for this post will be Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, with the following exceptions:
Two Saturdays per month, 9am-5pm, with either the preceding Friday or following Monday as TOIL. Approx. two weeks of out of every five, the postholder will work the Thursday late shift, 12pm-8pm. Flexibility regarding swapping of shifts is possible when needed.
Interviews will take place on Monday 21 May.
