Postdoctoral Research Assistant

The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in natural language processing with a focus on cross-lingual technologies. The position forms part of a European Commission Horizon 2020 grant, in collaboration with 5 other academic institutions (Jožef Stefan Institute, Slovenia; University of Ljubljana; University of Helsinki; University of La Rochelle; University of Edinburgh), and companies based in Estonia, Croatia and Finland. The project, EMBEDDIA, is planned to run for 3 years from January 2019.

As a whole, the EMBEDDIA project will investigate methods based on cross-lingual word embeddings, use them to develop technologies for less-resourced languages, and deploy them to produce efficient, accurate applications for the news media industry. QMUL’s part of the project is focused on the informal, conversational language used in social media and user-generated comments: developing suitable NLP models for analysing and understanding these comments and transferring those across languages to deploy in applications. An important part of this will be the development and adaptation of word embedding models that are sensitive to informality, ambiguity and context of use.

The successful applicant should have a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related topic.

Experience with statistical natural language processing (NLP) techniques and word embeddings / distributional semantic methods for NLP is essential, as are good general programming skills and willingness to learn new programming languages.

The successful candidate should have adequate mathematical skills to understand statistical modelling as applied in language processing, geometrical methods for semantic representation, and the principles of state-of-the-art neural networks. Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to collaborate with partners are essential.

Often at a short notice, the successful applicant must be willing to travel to partner institutions (in EU countries, see above) for extended working periods (not normally longer than 2 weeks, although opportunities for longer visits, particularly to the project coordinating institution in Ljubljana, Slovenia, may be available).

The post is a full time, fixed term appointment for 3 years, with an expected start date of 1st January 2019. Starting salary will be in the range of £33,615- £37,411 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
